Standard dimensions

Site bungalows are sold in multiples of 3 metres in length (2.44 m wide as standard, like a shipping container ISO, to optimise road transport). The most common sizes:

  • 3 m × 2.44 m (7.3 m²) — guard hut, technical room, small autonomous toilet.
  • 6 m × 2.44 m (15 m²) — individual office, changing room for 6-8 people, small canteen.
  • 9 m × 2.44 m (22 m²) — changing room for 10-14 people, shared office, canteen.
  • 12 m × 2,44 m (29 m²) — multi-purpose module, team office, large changing room.

The modules are joinable (connection by common panel) and stackable (limit of 3 levels generally, with external stairs). Standard internal height: 2,30 to 2,50 m depending on insulation.

The 5 points to check before buying used

  • Roof waterproofing. The number one weak point of bungalows that have seen use. Weld seam cracks, fatigued bitumen joints, capillary rises at corners: look under the interior roof covering.
  • Functional insulation. Tap the sandwich panels: if it sounds hollow, the foam has collapsed — insulation halved. Cost to replace a panel: £630 – £1,260.
  • Flooring. The floor wood rots if the low-level waterproofing leaked. Check for soft spots by walking and inspect corners.
  • Electrical installation. Request the original compliance certificate and check there have been no modifications. An electrical panel to bring up to code costs £525 – £1,575.
  • Doors and windows. They quickly become misaligned if the module is placed incorrectly. Check that the doors close properly without forcing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of a new site bungalow?+

Count £4,725 – £9,450 for a simple office module (6 m long, approximately 15 m²), £6,825 – £14,700 for an equipped changing room, £8,400 – £18,900 for a sanitary unit with showers and toilets. Prices vary according to insulation (60, 80 or 100 mm), interior equipment (heating, LED lighting, sockets, air conditioning) and the quality of finishes.

Is a bungalow the same as a site cabin?+

Algeco is a brand that has become generic — 'an algeco' commonly refers to any construction site cabin, whether from Algeco, Cougnaud, Portakabin or Laubner. Technically, all are prefabricated modular constructions made in workshops. Quality varies more between manufacturers than between historical brands: always ask to see a model before purchasing.

How much does it cost to rent a site bungalow?+

For long-term rentals (12+ months): £189 – £305/month for an office, £231 – £368 for a changing room, £294 – £504 for a sanitary unit. For short-term rentals (<3 months), prices are 30 to 50% higher. Add: delivery £263 – £525 round trip, deposit £525 – £2,625, and any connections £525 – £2,625.

Can a purchased bungalow be moved from construction site to construction site?+

That is precisely its purpose. A standard bungalow weighs 2 to 4 tonnes empty, moves with a flatbed truck and an auxiliary crane. Typical relocation cost: £420 – £945 per trip depending on distance. General contractors who move between sites can therefore easily recoup the cost of their bungalows over 10 to 15 years.

Do you need foundations to install a site cabin?+

Not for a short period (less than one year) — placing on concrete pads or light piles is sufficient. For prolonged use or soft ground, a concrete slab (or a perimeter longrine) is preferable. The site bungalow must always be placed perfectly horizontally — any inclination causes doors to warp. Careful levelling should be done at the time of placement.

What is the lifespan of a construction site bungalow?+

A well-maintained new site bungalow lasts 15 to 20 years in regular construction industry use. The light steel structure + corrugated metal cladding ages faster than a Corten shipping container, hence the increasingly frequent choice: buying a converted shipping container rather than a new bungalow for twice the lifespan but similar initial cost.
