Container rental for construction site

Container rental for construction site

On a construction site, a rented container serves three main purposes: secure tool storage, team accommodation, administrative base. Here are the best practices, rates for 2026 and pitfalls to avoid when equipping your sites at the right price.

Three uses, three types of modules

  • Tool and equipment storage — 20 or 40 feet dry. Secured against intrusion (Corten steel, lock-box protected padlock). For small tools, generators, bulky materials.
  • Site accommodation unit for team — Modular cabin (drying room, WC, mess room) or fitted-out 20ft shipping container. Mandatory under CDM 2015 Schedule 2 from the first worker on site.
  • Administrative base — project manager's office, meeting room, site supervisor. Site bungalow or fitted-out container with windows, insulation, heating.

CDM 2015 Schedule 2 — welfare facilities you must provide

From day one of construction works in the UK, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 require minimum welfare provision. Schedule 2 sets out the headline requirements — here are the practical thresholds, enforced by the HSE and local authority Environmental Health Officers.

Sch.2 §1 — Sanitary conveniences

Suitable and sufficient WCs, kept clean, ventilated and lit. Separate by gender where reasonably practicable, or single-occupancy lockable rooms. HSE indicative ratio: 1 WC + 1 urinal per 25 men (or 1 WC per 25 in mixed occupancy). Connection to mains drainage where possible, otherwise self-contained units serviced regularly.

Sch.2 §2 — Washing facilities

Hot and cold (or warm) running water, soap, towels or other hygienic drying. Adjacent to WCs and changing rooms. Showers mandatory where work is dirty (demolition, ground works, asbestos). Indicative: 1 wash basin per 5 workers; 1 shower per 10 workers in dirty trades.

Sch.2 §3 — Drinking water

Adequate supply of wholesome drinking water, clearly marked, at readily accessible places throughout the site. Cups provided unless supply is via a fountain. Increasingly important on hot-weather sites under HSE temperature guidance.

Sch.2 §4 — Changing rooms and lockers

Required where workers wear special clothing not appropriate to wear off-site. Lockable storage for personal clothes and work clothes separately, gender-separated, drying facilities for wet PPE. A 20ft fitted-out container typically gives 12-14 lockers; a 40ft, 20-24.

Sch.2 §5 — Rest facilities

Seating with backs, tables, means to boil water, microwave, protection from tobacco smoke. Suitable for pregnant workers and nursing mothers (somewhere to rest lying down). A 20ft canteen container seats 8-12; a 40ft, 16-24. Cleaned daily.

HSE guidance: HSG150 'Health and safety in construction' and CIS59 'Provision of welfare facilities at construction sites'. Verify the latest with HSE or a competent CDM advisor for your specific project (dirty trades, mixed occupancy, remote sites, long-duration works).

Security on construction sites: anti-theft and anti-intrusion measures

Electric power tools and generators represent nearly 60% of reported thefts on UK construction sites (source: Fédération Française du Bâtiment, 2024). A properly equipped container reduces the risk of successful intrusion by a factor of 5 to 10. Here are the 4 levels of security to choose from based on your exposure.

Level 1 — Lock + standard padlock

Sufficient for construction sites in guarded areas (human guarding or active surveillance) with less sought-after products. Marine padlock 60-80 mm, shackle diameter of at least 10 mm. Cost: £30-£80.

Level 2 — Lock-box + anti-cut padlock

The lock-box is a welded steel housing that protects the padlock from bolt cutters and angle grinders. Standard for unguarded construction sites in urban areas. Lock-box 80-£170, anti-cut padlock 60-£130. Adopted today by 80% of French construction sites.

Level 3 — GSM alarm + detectors

For high-value tools (generators, top-end portable machines) or isolated rural areas. Alarm with opening and vibration sensors, GSM transmission to site manager. Alarm purchase price 300-£680 or rental 40-£70/month. With professional monitoring: 60-£130/month.

Level 4 — Mobile autonomous video surveillance

Solar-powered mobile CCTV tower with presence detection, flash and siren. For high-risk sites (equipment > £85,000, areas with previous incidents). Rental 300-£600/month. Often immediate return on investment from the first theft prevented.

Insurance tip: for a long-term construction site, the cost of a GSM alarm + subscription is often lower than the additional professional liability insurance premium due to previous claims history. Request a quote with and without remote monitoring — the difference reveals the true value of the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why rent a shipping container instead of a site bungalow for a construction project?+

Three advantages: superior security (Corten steel vs light sheet metal, anti-intrusion), longer lifespan of equipment across multiple sites if purchased, lower cost per cubic metre for pure storage. A site bungalow remains preferable if you need an interior fit-out ready to use (changing room, equipped office). Both can be used on the same construction site.

What is the monthly rental cost for a construction site?+

20 ft dry container (tool and material storage): £84 – £189/month for long-term rental, £147 – £263 for short-term rental. A fitted-out office bungalow: £189 – £305/month. Modular sanitary unit: £294 – £504/month. Excluding delivery (£315 – £630) and connection costs (water, electricity: £525 – £2,625 depending on distance to the network).

How long for delivery to the construction site?+

Typically 48 to 72 hours in most urban areas of France. Some suppliers guarantee delivery within 24 hours in case of emergency at an extra cost (£105 – £315). Plan for access by a container truck (22 m long, 4.5 m high), or a crane truck if the location is restricted. The site manager must be present at delivery to validate the exact placement.

Can we change containers or add more during construction?+

Yes, it's standard practice. Adding a module to an ongoing construction site takes 48 to 72 hours and is charged at the same rate as the original. Swapping (if your current container is damaged or no longer suitable) is generally included in long-term contracts. For major configuration changes (switching from 20 to 40 feet), plan for a logistics package £210 – £420.

Content insurance during rental?+

Most rental contracts DO NOT include content insurance. Your contents (tools, equipment) are covered by your own professional liability or construction site insurance (all-risk construction site insurance). If your insurer does not cover mobile units, subscribe to an extension (£53 – £158/year per module). In case of theft, the procedures and deductible remain your responsibility.
