Storage container rental: compare the full cost
Renovation, moving or temporary stock: a container can be delivered to your address if access and the location are suitable. A storage centre avoids installing a container on your land. Compare rent and charges for your whole period of use, then check return arrangements.
Indicative rent by size and duration
Short, medium and long term are reference categories. The supplier must specify the period, rate and billing method applicable to your contract.
| Format | Short term | Medium term | Long term |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 feet dry | £70 – £197/month | £50 – £142/month | £40 – £110/month |
| 40 ft dry | £100 – £260/month | £80 – £197/month | £65 – £158/month |
| 40 ft high cube | £110 – £284/month | £90 – £213/month | £75 – £173/month |
Indicative rent excluding tax, insurance and options. Quote delivery and collection separately: the scenario assumes £263 – £630 for each trip. Separate deposit: £525 – £2,625, subject to contract.
Who for, what for?
- Home renovation — furniture and equipment moved temporarily, with access to belongings planned.
- Moving home — storage between homes: compare transporting your belongings with container delivery.
- Business archives — choose preservation conditions suited to the records; do not assume humidity is controlled in a Dry container.
- Seasonal stock — plan volumes, dates and how often you need access.
- Business equipment — arrange storage, locking and movements around the site.
- E-commerce — extra capacity selected around access to stock and order preparation.
Example: renting a 20ft container for 3 months
Assumption: the table’s short-term rate for 3 months, to be confirmed in the contract. Each trip separately uses the transport reference to illustrate charges; your quote may use different amounts.
- Monthly rent used
- £70 – £197/month
- Rent for 3 months (monthly × 3)
- £210 – £591
- Delivery to your address — assumption
- £263 – £630
- End-of-hire collection — assumption
- £263 – £630
- Subtotal: rent + delivery + collection
- £736 – £1,851
Separate deposit, outside the subtotal: £525 – £2,625
Subtotal excluding tax, insurance, options and site preparation. Budget separately for the deposit; its return depends on the contract and return condition. Specify handling, access charges and any extension.
Delivered container or unit at a storage centre?
Compare two storage arrangements, including journeys, access and installation requirements. Rent alone cannot determine the choice.
| Criterion | Unit at a storage centre | Container delivered to your site |
|---|---|---|
| Full budget | Rent, transporting your goods and agreed services | Rent, delivery, collection and agreed services |
| Location | At your selected centre | At your address, subject to a suitable site |
| Access to goods | Check hours, permissions and vehicle access | Depends on your site and loading arrangement |
| Initial loading | Take your goods to the centre | Load on site after delivery |
| Security | Check locks and the centre’s security arrangements | Container locking and security at your site |
| Space required | No container to install on your land | Confirm footprint, door opening and delivery area |
| Storage conditions | Temperature and humidity depend on the offered unit | Conditions depend on enclosure, equipment and site |
| Contract and end of rental | Term, notice and exit condition as contracted | Term, notice, collection and return condition as contracted |
Choose based on available space, access to your goods and total cost for the period you need. To compare buying too, add up the quoted charges and state the resale value you are assuming. No fixed threshold guarantees that buying will work out cheaper.
Check cover for the container and your goods
Before signing, check cover for the rented module, your contents and each party’s responsibilities separately. The supplier’s insurance does not automatically cover contents; a contract clause alone is not a basis for stating that all liability for your goods is excluded.
Private customers
Ask your insurer for written confirmation covering goods in this container at this address. Check theft, water and fire damage, duration, limits, excesses, exclusions and any extension needed. Premium and coverage depend on the policy.
Businesses: property, stock and interruption cover
Liability insurance and cover for your own property are different protections. Confirm stock cover at the container address, including off-site storage, and the theft, damage or refrigeration-failure risks. Declare values and ask about business-interruption cover.
Sensitive or valuable goods
For valuables, art or archives, obtain a valuation and suitable cover. Confirm security, temperature and humidity conditions and exclusions. Insurer selection and premium depend on the application; naming an insurer does not guarantee acceptance.
Keep inventories, photographs and relevant documents outside the container. Specify condition inspections and treatment of damage in the contract.
Four points to put in writing
- Minimum term, billing and end-of-hire notice.
- Access, unloading and collection appointment.
- Insurance, extra charges and extensions.
- Condition at handover and return, cleaning and deposit return.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does storage container rental cost?+
For a 20ft container at the short-term rate, the indicative range is £70 – £197/month. Add delivery, collection and quoted services. The 3-month example assumes £263 – £630 for each trip; confirm these charges for your address. The deposit of £525 – £2,625 is separate from rental costs and subject to contract.
How does it differ from a unit at a storage centre?+
A centre requires you to take goods there, without installing a container on your land. A delivered container lets you load on site but needs suitable space and access. Compare opening hours, storage conditions, insurance and the full cost for your duration.
Can I install shelving in a rented container?+
Ask the supplier before installing equipment, including removable items. Specify fixing methods, loads, permitted alterations and reinstatement. Drilling and cutting require written agreement; conditions depend on the offer.
What security checks should I make?+
Check doors, locking, padlocks and any lock protection on the offered container. Plan site lighting, access and monitoring around your goods. Locks do not replace checking insurance cover and requirements.
How is rental billed?+
Minimum term, billing frequency, advance payments, notice and extension or termination fees depend on the offered contract. Obtain a written schedule and full cost; no contractual period or discount applies to all suppliers.
What is the minimum rental period?+
It is set by the supplier and offer; there is no identical minimum for everyone. Give your dates and request the commitment, notice, extension rate and early-exit terms. For brief use, compare delivery and collection charges too.
